Windows(tm) Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
RDP is a native component of Windows(tm). Because the host workstation is disabled while being viewed remotely, RDP is not useful for training or support.
[edit]
Advantages
- Included with Windows(tm) XP Pro and XP Media Center Edition
- Excellent performance over low bandwidth connections
- Uses the same protocol and client as Windows(tm) Terminal Server
- Provides remote desktop application access to remote users
- RDP clients are available for Mac and Linux in addition to Windows
[edit]
Limitations
- Host workstations must be dedicated for remote access
- Host desktop cannot be viewed locally while being accessed remotely
- Remote clients cannot print from DOS programs on XP Hosts
- Exposes network port to insecure Username/Password protection
[edit]

Virtual Network Computing (VNC)
VNC allows the host workstation and the remote client to share a desktop and interact with it, making VNC an ideal platform for support and training over remote connections. TightVNC, included with the server, is a free, open source project designed for remote access and desktop shadowing.
[edit]
Installing TightVNC
- Download TightVNC for Windows or access it from the server at \\WaresServer\global\downloads
- Install TightVNC, making sure that you check Register TightVNC Server as a system service and Start or restart Tight VNC service
- After installation there should be a warning that says that no password has been set, just click Ok, if no warning was given then double click on the VNC icon in your task bar to get to where you can set the password
- In the password box, enter an easy to remember password that you should use on all of your workstations for ease of use
- Click Advanced
- Check Query console on incoming connections, this allows you to control who connects to your workstation
- Click Apply then Ok
- Now click Apply then Ok again
- Restart your computer
- TightVNC is now setup
- If asked for your IP address for a VNC connection, simply hover your mouse cursor over the VNC icon in the taskbar and you will see the IP address.
