WARES Server Introduction
Growing small businesses require an information technology (IT) infrastructure to provide e-mail communication, business accounting, internet access, and other services. Typical network purchase and installation prices start at $10,000, followed by continuing support expenses. The WARES Server is an alternative approach to IT, with a preadministered server package which can be built and installed for the price of the hardware alone. Once installed, the WARES Server is self-administering and eliminates continuing support expenses.

WARES Server Capabilities
[edit]
What the WARES Server does:
- The WARES Server is a network file server based on the Linux operating system.
- It provides an Internet firewall between your cable modem or DSL interface and your network.
- It establishes a secure local subnet using a separate 24-port network switch.
- It provides secure remote (Internet) access to server applications for Linux and Windows clients.
- It provides secure, virus-free email and Internet services to LTSP terminals and Linux clients.
- Local LTSP terminals can run supplied spreadsheet, word processor, and office productivity software.
- It provides file sharing services for Windows and DOS applications using SAMBA protocols.
- Local Windows workstations can run existing WARES for DOS from the WARES Server.
- Local Windows workstations can run new WARES Warehousing for Windows(tm) from the WARES Server.
- Remote Windows and Linux clients can execute WARES Warehousing for Linux on the WARES Server.
- Local LTSP and Linux clients can run WARES Warehousing for Linux on the WARES Server.
- The WARES Server enables conversion from WARES for DOS to WARES Warehousing for Windows(tm) in one easy step.
[edit]
What the WARES Server does not do:
- Remote clients cannot run Windows(tm) or DOS applications which are shared on the WARES Server. (But dedicated local Windows(tm) computers running WARES for DOS can be accessed by remote clients, giving the appearance of remote client access.)
- LTSP Terminals cannot run WARES for DOS or WARES Warehousing for Windows(tm) applications.
[edit]
Other requirements
- A public IP address is required for remote access and administration of the WARES Server. Use the site http://www.dslreports.com/ to evaluate service providers in your area.
